A Homeopathic Reproving of Glonine

The following is the detail report of the Reproving of the drug Glonine carried out at Shaad Homoeopathic Hospital Complex & Research Centre, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India during the 18th Residential Postgraduate Summer School in the Principles & Practice of Homoeopathy under Project Director – Dr. Aadil Chimthanawala. It was under the aegis of the department of Homoeopathic Cardiology of The National Academy of Homoeopathy, India. 19 homoeopathic graduates of the total 40 doctors participated in the project. The rest acted as controls. It was carried out for 12 days i.e. 15-26th April 2009.

We agree with Dr. T.F. Allen who pens in the preface of his Handbook of Materia Medica much might be said concerning the reliability of our symptomatology, the errors that have been perpetuated from year to year in old material and in new material obtained by faulty methods are well known. There is no doubt that some of even Hahnemann’s symptoms were observed in the sick both as apparent results of drug action and as probable cures, it is also true that most provers have allowed themselves to record as effects of drugs taken for experiment, symptoms which would have arisen spontaneously or which were suggestions of a mind watching for such effects.

There is no doubt that many if not most symptoms have been observed in only one or two persons as the effect of the drug and that many of these would fail confirmation by repeated experiment. But after all these allowances have been made there remains a good and true pathogenesis sufficient for a working Materia Medica and capable of justifying itself by unfailing results when put to the test of homoeopathic therapeutics. Numerous proving each consisting of but a single observation even the result of but a single dose appeal to our knowledge of the effects of analogous drugs as genuine; they must be utilized, their symptoms guide us unerringly to the saving of life and they cannot be discarded.

A detailed case taking on a Standardized Case Card of the Academy, physical examination, laboratory investigations (Haemogram & Complete Blood Count), Fundoscopy, Peak Flowmetry and  ECGs of all the provers & the controls was done prior to the start of the project. Those who were suffering from chronic disorders or had addictions (Tobacco, cigarette, Betel Nuts, Nus, Perfumes, etc.) were not included. 6 globules of No. 20 in 30C potency were administered on 15/4/2009 at 10.40 am by Dr. Gopal Bele Prof & Head, Department of Organon & Philosophy, Antar Bhartiya Homoeopathic Medical College, Nagpur in presence of Prof. Dr. Kasim Chimthanawala Director of PG Homoeopathic School of N.A.H.I & Prof Dr. Mrs. Sagira Chimthanawala Prof & Head, Dept of Homoeopathic Gynecology & Obstetrics, N.A.H.I. The temperature at Nagpur was 44 degrees Celsius.

Then began the tedious task of systemic & meticulous noting of the evolution of drug effects and the comparison of day books of all the provers to determine the true characters of the drug disease.

Mind Unusually talkative, great enthusiasm, state of elation and clear perception (6, 9, 11, 12, 15, 18) started 2 hours after the drug administration and lasted for 9 hours. Great irritability, snappy wants no one around, wants to be alone (2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 13, 18, 19), confusion of thoughts speaks the wrong word (1,2,3,4,6,8,9,12); great desire for weeping (4,5,6,7,10,11, 19) went to the room during the lecture and wept. It lasted for 4-6 hours more in the evening. No interest in the lecture, boredom. Staring blankly (1, 2, 3, 4,12, 14) remained for a day. Repeated after 2nd dose.

Head Dizziness with transient dimness of vision lasting for 5-6 minutes. Recurred after the 2nd and 3rd doses as well (1, 4, 5, 13). Headache gradually increasing in intensity, heavy sensation in both temples < heat of sun & 3pm. Started early morning just after Yoga and remained the whole day (1, 2, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19).

Eyes burning both eyes started about 12-14 minutes of the drug intake and lasted for half an hour (6, 11, 16, 19). Heaviness of lids for an hour (1, 12,15)

Nose Thin watery discharge from the right Nostril < evening. It lasted for a day (16).

Mouth Salivation started 25 minutes after drug intake for 15 minutes. This was repeated after the 2nd & 3rd dose. A single painful non bleeding ulcer in the right inner cheek appeared (17).

Throat soreness and congestion with sensation of splinter in the upper part of throat. The feeling lasted for 3 hours (6, 9, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19). Hoarse voice < night (14, 18, 19)

Stomach Burning in epigastrium with eructations (17, 18)

Abdomen Pain umbilicus, colicky  1 day after the dose. Unable  to   perform Yoga in the morning. Pain relapsed while the prover was assisting a normal delivery / labor (13)

Stool– dry, constipation unfinished sensation (1, 2, 8, 9, 12, 17)

Male Erection without desire (8, 9, 15, 16)

Female menses started 4-8 days before the due date. Flow increased (13, 19)

Chest Pain started in the left supra mammary region and spread to the left shoulder, left forearm. The muscular pain sensation as if the humerus is broken, started 7 hours after the first dose and remained constant for 2 days (2, 7, 8, 9). It then radiated to the lower back as well < movement. ECG was normal. No relief with pressure. Pain was unbearable and hence the drug effect had to be antidoted in the two provers (2, 7). Cough dry started in 2 hours and lasted for 1 day (3, 5, 8, 17, 18, 19)

Pulse Full, fast and irregular. Tachycardia (98-120/min) started within 5 minutes of drug intake. It lasted for 10 minutes.  Tachycardia continued for one and half days (2, 3, 4, 6, 12, 14). 3rd, 6th beats missed on ECG (1, 2, 3, 5, 11, 14). Palpitation < when lying (8). Raised diastolic Blood Pressure (12, 14) that remained for 3 days.

Back severe backache: L4-S2. para spinal muscle spasm < sitting > lying down (2,7).

Lower Extremities – swelling generalized in 14 provers especially at the ankle leading to a weight gain of 500 grams a day.

Skin dry patch on the right neck with great itching (1,7, 8, 17). Sweating in the soles & palms metallic odour (12, 13, 16, 19). Vesicular eruptions with acrid watery discharge and itching in the interphalyngeal space started 1 day after 2nd dose and continues till the end of the School period (1, 3, 11, 16, 17, 18, 19)

Sleep – Great sleepiness and drowsiness with frequent yawning (1,2,3,4,13).

Conclusion: – After the successful reproving of Stannum Met, Gelsemium, Carboneum Sulph & Sumbul in the previous schools, the reproving of Glonine was indeed a feather in the cap of the Academy. Quite a vast array of symptoms came out in the provings and we personally are exhilarated to be a part of this project. Of course many symptoms matched those given in the source books but a few new symptoms like those in the male sexual sphere, skin and Pulse were experienced by the participants. It has instilled in us a greater sense of confidence for the appreciation and practice of Hahnemannian System of Medicine.

  1. Details of the administration of 1st dose are given but when & how were the further doses repeated? Was the rate of repetition same for everyone? What was the duration of the whole study? Why was the new data not tallied with at least the known keynotes or the prominant individualising symptoms of Gloninum from oue standard books of materia medica? What were the major discripancies found on tallying? what factor could they be attributed to? Till such scrupulous study is done, only writing down symptoms in collected form is not good enough.

  2. good effort. But it lacks the peculier throbbing headache of Glon, may due to proving in 30th potency.
