Bihar, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have zoomed ahead in the registered doctors’ list of Ayush Health Care Delivery System being promoted by the Central Government under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), while south Indian states lag behind.
Under NRHM, the Centre plans to revitalise local health care by promoting Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) practitioners to provide affordable and quality health care.
As per the data available from the Union Health Ministry, Bihar tops the list with 1,32,122 Ayush practitioners. This include 96,046 ayurveda, 6,665 unani and 29,411 naturopathy practitioners.
Maharashtra follows Bihar with 1,18,472 Ayush practitioners. This include 60,136 ayurveda, 5,177 unani, 53,159 homoeopathy practitioners.
Uttar Pradesh has a total of 82,102 Ayush practitioners. Out of which 40,004 are from ayurveda, 11,638 are from unani, 30,460 from homoeopathy. Madhya Pradesh has 56,943 Ayush practitioners. Out of which, 43,168 are from ayurveda, 1,139 from unani, seven from naturopathy and 12,629 from homoeopathy.
Among South Indian states, Karnataka is leading with 35,698 Ayush practitioners with 26,189 ayurveda, 1,426 unani, four siddha, 375 naturopathy and 7,074 homoeopathy practitioners.
Tamil Nadu is at number two with 30,824 Ayush practitioners. Out of which 4,017 are from ayurveda, 1,100 from unani, 6043 from siddha, 584 from naturopathy and 18,990 from homoeopathy.
Kerala has a total of 29,945 Ayush practitioners, out of which 17,634 are from ayurveda, 84 from unani, 1,521 from siddha,64 from naturopathy,10,642 from homoeopathy.
While Andhra Pradesh has 27,983 Ayush practitioners. Odisha has 9,663 Ayush practitioners with 5,806 from ayurveda, 1,100 from unani, 6,043 from siddha, 584 from naturopathy and 18,990 from homoeopathy.[Source]
