Zaheer takes to homeopathy

Zaheer, who will be replaced by Sreesanth for the series beginning on Sunday in Jaipur, as per a board statement, seems to trust homeopathic medicine more than allopathic or other kinds of medication.

This became evident on Thursday as the left-armer opted for a wellknown brand of homeopathic massage oil and tablets as he nursed his thigh injury.

The injury — described by coach Gary Kirsten as “tightening of the quadriceps” — cropped up on Wednesday.

Zaheer, 31, was seen clutching his thigh and grimacing, and came off the field on a few occasions to apply ice on the troublesome area. A few small bottles of homeopathic medicines and three bottles of arnica oil, well known to be a quick healer, were bought for him.

“The message from the dressing room was get some medicines and we have bought the same. This includes arnica oil for massage and five- six bottles of the usual round tablets.

When pointed out that it takes time for homeopathic medicines to show results, the source said: “That’s true, but maybe he has more trust in homeopathic medicines than allopathic.”

On Thursday, when India needed seven wickets to win the match and draw the series, Zaheer worked out in a gymnasium. “He spent some time in the Eden Gardens gymnasium during the first session. Even if he had gone out to the field, as per the rules, he wouldn’t have been allowed to bowl for the same period for which he was off the field — and that period was a couple hours. So, it was decided that he would rather rest and get match fit as soon as possible,” the source said.

Zaheer, never a natural athlete, has a history of breaking down. He has been bowling consistently well since his immensely successful stint with Worcestershire in the English county season in 2006.
