Allopathy doctors seek exclusive emblem

With all types of medical practitioners using the prefix ‘Dr’, modern medicine (allopathy) doctors now want a unique emblem that will exclusively signify their practice.

Accordingly, the Indian Medical Association – an umbrella body of doctors practicing modern medicine – has called for suggestions from their various State branches across the country. Once finalised, IMA plans to send the emblem for approval to the Medical Council of India and the health ministry.

“The plan is to have an emblem that will resemble the modern medicine doctors. Today, the abbreviation ‘Dr’ is used by homoeopathy and ayurveda practitioners too. There is no sign to differentiate the MBBS doctors,” said Dr K K Aggarwal, who heads the IMA which counts over 2.5 lakh doctors as its members all over the country.

“We want something simple and easily recognisable. If a layman spots the emblem from a distance, he should automatically know that there is a modern medicine practitioner at that spot,” said Aggarwal. He added, “So far, as modern medicine doctors have no exclusive emblem, it is time for them to get one.”  [Source]

  1. Outrageous .I think if the IMA agrees to this then they should also have diff emblems for MD, MS etc etc .How can a common man remember all these ?Isn’t the degree enough to be publically displayed ?
