Psorinum beyond the Acutes

Dr Disha Rao K

Over the years in clinical practice, I have consistently observed favourable and prompt results in acute conditions such as upper and lower respiratory tract infections, diarrhoea, tonsillitis, and otitis media. However, more recently, Ive noticed a change—these infections seem to present with greater intensity, and recovery often takes longer than before. This shift, I believe, may be influenced by several modern factors: our increasingly sedentary lifestyles, constant exposure to screens and digital stimulation, electromagnetic radiation, and perhaps even the lasting impact of COVID-19 or its vaccination on our immune response and the virulence of circulating pathogens.

In response to this evolving clinical picture, I have gradually moved towards prescribing higher potencies—particularly 1M—in acute cases, as opposed to the 30C or 200C potencies I previously relied on. Repeated clinical experiences showed that 200C often failed to bring the desired effect promptly, and switching to 1M brought about a marked improvement. This pattern led me to start with 1M from the outset in several acute cases, and the results were consistently promising.

Simultaneously, I began to feel the need for additional support alongside the indicated acute remedy. I incorporated biochemic combinations to facilitate and accelerate the healing process. My interest in Psorinum was reignited during an online session by Dr. Gaurang Gaikwad, which I attended during the COVID-19 lockdown. He had highlighted Psorinums usefulness in deep-seated pathologies and in cases where the vitality appeared low. Encouraged by these insights, I used Psorinum widely during the COVID-19 pandemic and in post-COVID conditions, with strikingly positive outcomes.

Since then, I have explored Psorinum more deliberately in practice and have stumbled upon some fascinating clinical outcomes—what I call accidental findings. The following two cases serve as examples to illustrate the deeper role Psorinum may play beyond conventional acute settings, and how these experiences shaped my understanding of the remedy’s scope.

Case 1: Young Woman with Recurrent Constipation and Allergic Rhinitis

A 20-year-old woman under my care for allergic rhinitis and various minor ailments, including episodic constipation, had responded well to remedies over time. Most of her complaints improved significantly, except for the constipation, which recurred intermittently, although with reduced intensity. A peculiar symptom she consistently reported was swelling of both upper and lower eyelids during any febrile illness. This oedema would last for 3–4 days until the infection fully resolved and often interfered with her daily routine.

During one such episode of acute upper respiratory tract infection with fever, she developed a lingering post-viral cough. Based on her clinical presentation and overall state, I prescribed a single dose of Psorinum 1M.

Three days later, she returned reporting profuse sweating of her palms and soles since taking the dose. Interestingly, she also noted a marked improvement in her cough and a significant boost in her general energy levels. When asked about a history of such sweating in childhood, she vaguely recalled it but was uncertain.

I advised her to wait and observe for a few more days. A week later, she reported that the sweating had subsided, but her palms and soles had become dry and had started peeling. I chose not to intervene and monitored the progress over the next 20 days. She continued to send photographs of the affected areas, and within 10 days, the skin had returned to normal.

What followed was remarkable. She reported complete relief from her long-standing constipation. She experienced regular bowel movements, a sense of complete evacuation, and no recurrence—even after consuming foods that previously triggered her symptoms. Her allergic rhinitis also resolved, and she reported feeling generally well and more vitalised than before.

It has now been a year since the Psorinum dose. She has had two episodes of fever since then—but notably, there was no recurrence of the eyelid oedema that had previously accompanied every febrile illness.

Case 2: Longstanding Acidity Resolved Through an Acute Intervention

A 55-year-old man would consult me sporadically, usually once a year, for complaints of acid reflux and burning in the retrosternal region, which flared up intermittently. Initially, Nux vomica in acute doses would bring him relief. However, upon observing the recurrence of symptoms over time, I undertook a more detailed case-taking and prescribed Lycopodium, based on his constitutional picture. The results were promising. His complaints reduced in both frequency and intensity. He would still occasionally experience mild episodes of acidity, but they were infrequent and much less distressing.

During one such acute episode, I decided to prescribe a single dose of Psorinum, guided by his overall susceptibility and energy state. A few days after the dose, he reported peeling of the skin on his hands along with profuse sweating of the palms—very similar to the response observed in Case 1. He had no recollection of having experienced such symptoms in the past.

I advised no further remedy and placed him on placebo. The acid reflux subsided completely, and the skin changes resolved on their own. What was most striking was that he has not reported any recurrence of acidity in the months since—something he had struggled with for years.

Learning from Clinical Observations:
These cases were not planned chronic prescriptions but rather acute interventions where Psorinum was chosen based on the totality and vitality of the patient. Yet, unexpectedly, both patients experienced deeper-level healing. Their chronic patterns began to resolve, suggesting that the remedy had stimulated a deeper shift.

Such experiences are a reminder of the layers we work with in Homoeopathy. The classical concepts of miasms, suppression, and direction of cure often seem theoretical when read, but in the clinic, they come alive in moments like these. To witness an acute prescription catalyse the resolution of old, persistent symptoms reinforces the depth and dynamism of our system of medicine.

Every day, Homoeopathy continues to amaze me—not only in how it brings relief but in how it restores the systems balance from within, often in the most unexpected ways.
