A detailed study of the difference between the original and revised edition of Knerr’s repertory

A detailed study of the difference between the original and revised edition of Knerr’s repertory

Dr S Fathima Mujahitha

Calvin Borst Knerr, a disciple of Dr. Constantine Hering and chief editor of Repertory of Hering’s Guiding Symptoms of our Materia Medica, had contributed in the completion of Hering’s Guiding Symptoms of Materia Medica in finalised publication. “We never selected the remedy according to the loose generalisations in fashion with many, and considered more scientific. We never walked on pathological slits, but always took the symptom as a reality, on the one side observed by the prover, and on the other side observed on the sick” quoted by Dr. Hering. His authenticated follower had indulged in making index for the enlarged 10 volumes of Materia Medica based on his quotes. The Prover’s Language, Observations that were made by prover and sick became the direct index in the form of Repertory.

There are two Concordance repertories such as The Concordance Repertory to the Materia Medica by Gentry and Repertory of Hering’s Guiding Symptoms of Materia Medica by Calvin B Knerr. These repertories were used widely in 18th Century mainly as a reference book since these were difficult to use for systematic repertorization. Now a days, these repertories became a great reference books in practice especially Knerr Repertory.

After the completion of Hering’s Guiding Symptoms of Materia Medica in 1895, the Repertory was published in the year 1896 by Dr. Calvin B Knerr. It is now published as an augmented and revised edition by Dr. Siva Raman of Kollengodu in 2006.

The utilisation of particular Repertory needs its own clarification and differentiation from its source. The following content helpful in comparing the both editions of Knerr’s Repertory.
