Abstract
This article reviews Proceso Sánchez Ortega’s interpretation of miasms, correlating psora, sycosis, and syphilis with cellular pathology, color symbolism, drug tendencies, and miasmatic modulation for practical homeopathic application.
Keywords : Miasms, Psora, Sycosis, Syphilis, Cellular Pathology, Colour Symbolism
Introduction
Chapter Five – A General Discussion of the Miasms, The Basis of their Recognition – Deficiency, Excess and Perversion from Notes on Miasms by Proceso Sánchez Ortega presents a practical explanation of Hahnemann’s miasmatic doctrine. The three fundamental miasms—psora, sycosis, and syphilis—correspond to basic cellular alterations: deficiency (psora), excess (sycosis), and perversion (syphilis), linking constitutional tendencies to pathology, materia medica, and clinical observation. Ortega also assigns symbolic colors—blue for psora, yellow for sycosis, and red for syphilis—to aid recognition. In reality, each individual carries a blend of the three miasms, forming a unique miasmatic modulation that influences constitution, symptoms, and disease progression, helping the homeopath interpret the patient as a complete individual.
Cellular Function and Pathological Correlation with Miasms
Ortega explains that all pathological changes in the body can be reduced to three basic disturbances of cellular nutrition and function:
- Deficiency – reduced activity or lack of function
- Excess – exaggerated activity
- Perversion – distorted or destructive function
These correspond directly to the three miasms.
| Cellular Alteration | Corresponding Miasm | Pathological Meaning |
| Deficiency | Psora | Lack, inhibition, poor nutrition |
| Excess | Sycosis | Overgrowth, exuberance, exaggeration |
| Perversion | Syphilis | Destruction, degeneration, distortion |
Thus, what happens at the cellular level is reflected in the whole organism, and the symptoms seen in the patient express these underlying miasmatic disturbances.
Characteristics of the Three Miasms
Each miasm has its own typical pattern of expression in the body, mind and pathology.
| Miasm | Fundamental Nature | General Characteristics | Pathological Expression |
| Psora | Deficiency / Inhibition | Weakness, lack, sensitivity, timidity | Functional disturbances, dryness, debility |
| Sycosis | Excess / Exuberance | Overgrowth, ostentation, exaggeration | Hypersecretion, proliferation, accumulation |
| Syphilis | Perversion / Destruction | Aggression, degeneration, deformity | Ulceration, destruction, structural changes |
Important examples given by Ortega include:
- Dryness of mucous membranes → Psora
- Increased secretions → Sycosis
- Ulceration and tissue destruction → Syphilis
However, a single symptom does not define a miasm. The homeopath must always consider the totality of symptoms.
Three Basic Reactions to Aggressive Agents
When the body faces an aggressive or disease-producing influence, it may react in three basic ways corresponding to the miasms.
| Reaction | Miasm | Example |
| Inhibition | Psora | Timidity, weakness, reduced activity |
| Flight / Overreaction | Sycosis | Hyperactivity, excessive growth |
| Aggression / Destruction | Syphilis | Violence, tissue destruction |
Examples in physiological functions:
| Function | Psoric | Sycotic | Syphilitic |
| Intestinal function | Constipation | Diarrhoea | Dysenteric spasm |
| Heart rate | Bradycardia | Tachycardia | Arrhythmia |
These examples illustrate how functional disturbances reflect miasmatic tendencies.
Colour Correlation of the Miasms
Ortega introduced a symbolic colour representation to help recognize the miasms more easily.
| Miasm | Colour | Symbolic Meaning |
| Psora | Blue | Cold, passive, deficient |
| Sycosis | Yellow | Bright, exuberant, ostentatious |
| Syphilis | Red | Hot, destructive, aggressive |
For example:
- Blue (Psora) → passivity, lack, inhibition
- Yellow (Sycosis) → brightness, exaggeration, showiness
- Red (Syphilis) → intensity, aggression, destruction
This colour symbolism helps the homeopath visualize the dominant miasmatic tendency in a patient.
Blending of Miasms
No individual expresses only one miasm. Every person carries a mixture of psora, sycosis and syphilis.
Just as primary colours mix to create many shades, miasms also combine in varying proportions.
Example: 68% psora, 22% sycosis and10% syphilis. This combination produces a unique constitutional pattern in that individual. Because the proportions vary, each person represents a different miasmatic “shade.”
Miasmatic Modulation
Ortega describes the unique mixture of miasms in each person as miasmatic modulation.
Key ideas:
- Each person has all three miasms
- One miasm usually dominates
- The others are present in lesser proportions
Thus, patients may appear:
- Predominantly psoric
- Predominantly sycotic
- Predominantly syphilitic
But the final expression is always a combination.
Drugs and Miasmatic Expression
Medicines in the materia medica also express miasmatic tendencies. Most remedies contain symptoms of all three miasms, but one miasm may predominate.
Example: Calcarea carbonica: Predominantly psoric remedy. The typical features of this being-
- Inhibition and slowness
- Coldness and weakness
- Feelings of inferiority
- Poor nutrition and development
However, it may still show secondary syphilitic or sycotic symptoms.
Example: Lycopodium clavatum. Considered a trimiasmatic remedy.
Meaning:
- Contains strong features of psora
- Also significant sycosis
- And noticeable syphilitic tendencies
Therefore, it can act in complex miasmatic states.
Interpretation of Colour by the Homeopath
The colour symbolism proposed by Ortega is not literal diagnosis, but a conceptual tool. For the homeopath, colour represents:
- The dominant miasmatic tendency
- The emotional and pathological tone
- The constitutional expression of the patient
By observing the physical appearance, behaviour, reactions to disease the homeopath may perceive the “colour tone” of the constitution.
Importance of Miasmatic Knowledge to the Homeopath
Understanding miasms is essential because it allows the homeopath to:
- Understand constitutional tendencies
- Recognize deep pathological processes
- Interpret patient history and heredity
- Predict possible disease evolution
- Select appropriate constitutional remedies
According to Ortega, the homeopath should observe every patient in terms of miasmatic characteristics, since they represent the biological heritage of disease carried through generations. Thus, knowledge of miasms enables the physician to view the patient not as a collection of symptoms but as a complete individual, expressing a unique combination of psora, sycosis and syphilis.
Conclusion
Understanding miasms through cellular pathology, color symbolism, and their blended modulation enables the homeopath to perceive the patient holistically, guiding accurate constitutional assessment, remedy selection, and prediction of disease evolution in clinical practice.
