ABSTRACT
Homoeopathy in veterinary medicine is currently making great strides, particularly due to its advantages such as low cost, easy administration through drinking water or food, thereby avoiding the stress of tying the animal or the traumatic application of the drug. Its benefits include improved immunity, prevention of diseases, reduction of stress, and effective management of both chronic and infectious conditions without harmful side effects.
KEYWORDS- High Dilution, Veterinary Homoeopathy, Benefits
INTRODUCTION
Homoeopathy was developed in the early 1800s by German physician Samuel Hahnemann. His method is based on the principle of “like cures like.” Homoeopathic medicines are developed by observing symptoms in patients by given doses of various substances and then treating them with highly dilute solutions of the same substance. 1 The idea of using homoeopathy to treat animals is called “Veterinary Homoeopathy” which offers a natural, holistic approach to animal health, emphasizing individualized treatment and the body’s innate ability to heal itself. Homoeopathy continues to grow in popularity as pet owners and veterinarians seek safe, non-toxic treatments for their animals. 2
The Academy of Veterinary Homoeopathy, founded in 1995 comprises a group of veterinarians who share a common desire to restore true health to their patients using homoeopathic remedies. 1
HIGH DILUTION
Homoeopathic medicines are completely natural, and are based on extremely diluted extracts from plants, minerals, and animals, which have medicinal properties when used in such weak dilutions. Whatever plant or animal the remedy is based on, it is harvested and only the relevant part of the plant is extracted (for example, Fragaria, a remedy often used to aid dental health in pets, is based on the ripe fruit of the wild strawberry, so the leaves are initially removed from the plant). This raw material will then be ground and dissolved in water or alcohol, depending on the nature of the raw material. Potentization” is a process in which a substance which was diluted with alcohol or distilled water then vigorously shaken in a process called “succussion.” Insoluble solids such as quartz and oyster shell are diluted (by trituration) by grinding them with lactose. This process is repeated several times until the desired level of dilution is achieved. Once the desired dilution is achieved, the remaining product is the active ingredient of homoeopathic medicine. [3] [4] Once a medicine is diluted more than 24 times or 12C potency, it is diluted more than the Avogadro number (6.23 x 10¯²³), which theoretically indicates that there is no definitive effectiveness with homoeopathic medicines beyond this dilution. Both laboratory and clinical results have proven that homoeopathic medicines are effective even beyond this dilution. 5
VETERINARY HOMOEOPATHY
Homoeopathy was widely used in humans and later in animals for many years after its discovery around 1796. In the intervening period (1796-2016) pharmacology emerged as a science from Materia Medica and became the mainstay of veterinary treatment. Homoeopathy is still used by veterinarians today, although this use is limited but important. 6 Early homoeopaths often treated both humans and animals, with many recorded cases of successful healing in dogs, horses, and cattle. In the nineteenth century, veterinarians used homoeopathic texts that were developed specifically for their profession. Veterinarians can take formal training courses to become certified in Veterinary Homoeopathy. Homoeopathy is used in dogs, cats, horses, ruminants, and birds.7

BENEFITS OF HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINES IN ANIMAL HEALTH 2
- Holistic Approach- Homoeopathy treats the whole animal by focusing on the animal’s physical, emotional, and mental health, not just the symptoms of the disease. This holistic approach considers all underlying issues and promotes overall well-being rather than just relieving symptoms.
- Residue-Free & Safe- Homoeopathic medicines are made from natural substances such as plants, minerals, and animal products. Because they are highly diluted, they are generally safe and non-toxic to pets, reducing the risk of side effects and making homoeopathy a gentle option for treating a variety of ailments.
- Individualized Treatment- Every pet is unique, and homoeopathy provides personalized treatment plans that take this into account. Medications are selected based on the pet’s specific symptoms and overall health, ensuring a customized approach to address the root cause of the problem.
- Boosts Immune System- Homoeopathic remedies work by stimulating the body’s natural healing mechanisms, helping to strengthen the immune system. This can make pets more resilient to infections and diseases, supporting long-term health.
- Anxiety and stress relief– Pets can experience stress and anxiety, just like humans. Homoeopathy offers gentle remedies that can help calm anxious pets, reduce stress-related behaviors, and improve their overall emotional health.
- Complementary to Conventional Treatments- Homoeopathy can be used alongside conventional veterinary treatments, providing an integrated approach to pet health. This is especially helpful in managing complex conditions that require multiple treatments.
ADMINISTERATION OF HOMOEOPATHIC REMEDIES TO PETS
- DOSAGE AND POTENCY- Common potencies include 6C, 30C, and 200C.
- FREQUENCY- Remedies can be given every 1-2 hours during acute symptoms and reduced to 3-4 times a day as symptoms improve.
- ADMINISTRATION METHODS- Remedies can be given directly into the mouth, mixed into food or water, or applied externally as directed.
CONCLUSION- Homoeopathy offers a safe, natural, and holistic approach to pet care, helping to treat a variety of ailments and improve their overall health. It focuses on individualized treatment and uses gentle, non-toxic medicines to maintain the health of pets.
