The correct interpretation of the language of the patient starts with incorporating those symptoms into our homoeopathic translator i.e. Repertory and interpretation of the patient’s language through Rubrics. This article discusses about the Interpretation of Mind Rubric Amusement along with the Comparison of its Medicines in its subrubrics from Kent Repertory.

Introduction: The dictionary meaning of the word Amusement is “the feeling caused by something that makes you laugh or smile; or by something that entertains you”. Another meaning tells us that Amusement is something that makes time pass pleasantly; an entertainment.

The word “amusement” originates from the Middle French word “amusement,” derived from the verb “amuser,” meaning “to entertain,

deceive,” which in turn comes from the Latin “muser” meaning “stare stupidly”. [1, 2]

Here’s a more detailed breakdown: [1, 2]

  • Middle French “amusement”: This is the direct ancestor of the English word.
  • French “amuser”: Meaning “to entertain, deceive”.
  • Latin “muser”: Meaning “stare stupidly”.
  • “a-” (in “amuser”): This prefix, meaning “to” or “causal effect”

The feeling of being entertained or laugh can come from anything – it can be watching movies or dramas, adventurous sports or going on scary joy rides, making poses for photographs, getting ready doing make-up, buying new clothes or accessories every other day, listening to music. Even eating food of various varieties and in large quantities can be a kind of amusement. Anything which can give the Dopamine a rush can be a form of amusement. Even amusement can be something where a person can feel excited; thrilled; scared, can scream because it can also be a sort of entertainment for certain people where they are getting scared. A person is getting to laugh, getting entertained is the motive whether it comes by getting thrilled or excited is not the matter. The feeling of the patient is important. So, this feeling of excitement; thrill; getting scared, where a person can laugh are all forms of amusement.

There are two Sub-rubrics given under the Rubric Amusement in Kent Repertory. First is Averse to and second is Desire for.

AMUSEMENT, averse to: The meaning of word aversion is a strong feeling of not liking something/somebody. In the following medicines the aversion/strong dislike towards amusement consists of different reasons.

1.BARYTA CARBONICA : The personality of Baryta Carb is like foolish type; doing foolish things; behaving in a foolish manner, escaping from people, not making any friends because they think everyone will make fun of me. I’ll become a product of other people’s amusement rather than me getting any amusement. This fear of being laughed at by others in Baryta prevents them to do any kind of amusement making them feel they do not deserve enjoyment therefore this aversion to amusement. They feel criticized of being called as foolish therefore they feel they does not need any kind of amusement.

  1. MENYANTHES: In this medicine the aversion to amusement comes from the feeling of something wrong is going to happen; something evil will happen that’s why I should not involve myself into any kind of fun or entertainment. If I get involved in any kind of fun I will have to undergo a lot of hardships; I will have to do some lower job; I will have very less money. Oh, I will have to suffer too much because of this entertainment that I’ll do. In Menyanthes there develops a kind of Anxiety that something bad is going to happen.

And in the family of Veratrum Album; Lilium tig – the most important thing for them is Social Position. The thing or feeling that matters for them is social position – How much I am socially acceptable? The feeling of Lilium Tig is that it feels that in the eyes of society I am a very religious person; richest person doing all sorts of good deeds and right things and this is what everybody should know about me that I am a good and noble person. So, if I get involved in amusement; people will start calling me and will start inviting me for all kinds of social gatherings and functions and I will somehow lose my social position which will be the big headache for me. Moreover if I start involving with people normally they will come to know about my sexual habits and all sexual thoughts and the image of me being a prestigious person in front of them will get destroyed and everyone will start thinking bad about me and that is why I should keep myself away from all sorts of entertainment as people will come to know about my sexual thoughts and excitement. The feeling of maintaining a good and powerful image in front of others keeps the Lilium tig away from all sorts of amusement. The indulgence of Lilium tig into religious affections comes from being too much into sexual thoughts and this is one of the main reason of being religious. The thoughts of Lilium tig are like – I should keep myself busy so that my mind do not go into sexual thoughts and also being busy will free me from all sorts of entertainment and my social position will be maintained forever which is the most important thing for me.

For Oleander its better to stay alone rather than getting into entertainment/amusement. Oleander’s main concern is grasping and retaining things as they can read and can even memorize but main difficulty arises for them is when they have to understand things. When there is continuous conscious effort to understand things they have read the Oleanders starts to suffer and gets into confusion and lack of understanding which leads to walking away of them from all sorts of entertainment.
