The source of crude substance and its influence on proving symptoms – comparison of two provings of Loxodonta africana (African Elephant).

Introduction

A specific niche research area within the Department of Homoeopathy at Durban University of Technology (DUT) is that of homoeopathic provings of indigenous substances; 13 blinded, placebo controlled provings of which have been completed at DUT between 1999-2008 [3].

Researchers at DUT identified that there was limited formal research comparing the proving symptoms produced from differing sources of the animal itself. It was hypothesised that a reproving of an existing animal remedy utilizing a different sample would yield similar proving symptoms i.e. the essence of the animal itself would be reflected in both provings. The proving of Lac loxodonta africana (milk of the African elephant) conducted by Nancy Herrick [4] provided a unique opportunity for researchers[1, 2] at DUT to test this theory and simultaneously explore further the therapeutic value of an indigenous substance.

Thus, the objective of this study was to conduct a double-blind, placebo controlled proving of the ivory of an African elephant and subsequently compare the materia medica thereof with that of Lac loxodonta africana (milk from an African elephant).
