A detailed regulation for the post graduate studies in Homoeopathy
PART I . Preliminary
1.Short Title: These regulations may be called the Homoeopathy Post Graduate Degree Course. M.D, (HOM) Regulations of…..
2.Definitions: In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise required: .
(a) ‘Act’ means the Homoeopathy Central Council Act,1973 (59 of 1973).
(b) ‘C.C.H.’ means the Central Council of Homoeopathy, New Delhi constituted under the Act,
(c)’Course’means the mentioned under 3 of this regulations.
(d) A ‘post Graduate Degree’ in Homoeopathy’ means M.D.(Hom) recognised by the C.C.H.
(e) A ‘Degree in Homoeopathy means ‘BHMS’ or its equivalent declared there to by the C.C.H.
(f) A ‘Diploma in Homoeopathy means ‘DHMS’ or its equivalent declared there to by the C.C.H.
(g) Homoeopathy College’ means a Homoeopathic Medical College or an institute affiliated to a University and recognised by the C.C.H.
(h) Teaching experience’ means the teaching experience in the subject concerned in a College or an institution recognised by the University or C.C.H. after obtaining the qualification prefixed.
(i) Professional Experience’ means experience in Clinical practice in Government Institution/Hospital/Dispensary or an institution recognised by the University of Kerala after obtaining the qualification prefixed.
(j) Board of Examiners’ means the Board of Examiners constituted by the University for with a Chairman from among the examiners of the examination concerned.
PART 11. COURSES
3. Post Graduate Degree Courses shall be in the following Subjects:
(a) M.D. (Hom) Organon of Medicine.
(b) M.D. (Hom) Materia Medicine.
(c) M.D (Hom) Repertory.
(d) M.D (Hom) Medicine.
(e) M.D (Hom) Surgery.
(f) M.D. (Hom) Obstetrics & Gynaecolgy.
(g) M.D. (Hom) Pathology & Microbiology.
(h) M.D. (Hom) Community Medicine.
(i) M.D. (Hom) Forensic Medicne & Toxicology.
(j) M.D (Hom) Anatomy.
(k) M.D. (Hom) Physiology & Bio-chemistry.
(l) M.D. (Hom) Pharmacy & Pharmacology.
4. Each Course shall be of three years duration including one year of house job or equivalent thereof.
5. (a) Candidates shall pursue a regular course of study and research in the respective department of a Homoeopathic College under the guidance of a guide/supervisor recognised by the University, giving emphasis on practical training, participation in lectures, Demonstrations, Symposia, Seminars, Group Discussions, Clinical meetings, journal Clubs etc.The candidate shall be given graded responsibility in the management and treatment of patients entrusted to his care/his duties in the Department concerned of the Homoeopathic College.He shall participate in teaching and training of under graduate students & internees.
(b) Candidates are required to write a thesis or dissertation on a topic in his subject approved by the University of Kerala of not less than 10,000 words (Ten Thousand) with detailed commentary which should provide the candidate with necessary background of training in research methods and techniques along with the art of writing research papers and learning and making use of Library.
6. (i) Curriculum of the courses shall comprise the following:-
A. General Subjects:
1. The Man in Health (Holistic concept)
2. The Man in Disease (Holistic concept)
3. History of Medicine, Scientific Methodologyincluding Research Methodology and Statistics.
B. Subjects of specialty
(a) Clinical
1. Organon of Medicine.
2. Materia Medica.
3. Repertory.
4. Medicine (Practice of Homeopathy in medicine)
5. Surgery (Practice of Homoeopathy in surgery)
6. Obstetrics (Practice of Homoeopathy in Obstetrics
(b) Non Clinical
1. Pathology & Microbiology.
2. Community Medicine.
3. Forensic medicine & Toxicology.
4. Anatomy.
5. Physiology & Bio-Chemistry.
6. Pharmacy and pharmacology.
(ii) Every candidate has to study the General Subjects mentioned above which constitute the part I Examination, in addition to the subject in which he is specialising. The subject of specialty shall constitute the part II Examination.
PART III .Admission to course
7. No candidate shall be admitted to M.D. (Hom) Course unless he holds a Degree in Homoeopathy and permanent registration with a state Homoeopathy Medical Council/Board or Central Council of Homoeopathy.
8. A candidate on admission to the Course shall apply in the prescribed form for registration to the university with remittance of fees prescribed not less than three academic years.
PART IV. Syllabus
9. The syllabus under General and Specialty Subjects shall be as follows:
A. General
(i) The Man ‘in Health (Holistic Concept) – Structural Functional and Psychological Organisation of Man and his adaptation to the environment in health.
The study of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Psychology are integrated in such a manner to help the practical application of this knowledge in clinical medicine.
(ii) The Man in Disease (Holistic Concept)- Structural, Functional and Psychological Organisation of the sick and his deficient
adaptation to his environment.
The study of pathology (Psychological, functional and structural deviations from the State of Health) should include a probe into the evolution by Phenomena of disease paying attention to the cause effect relationship viz the effects of extrinsic (micro organisms parasites, viruses and other stimuli) and intrinsic (susceptibility based on miasms) factors along with their current interpretations and the abnormal expressions of the sick pervading his whole being.
(iii) History of Medicine, Scientific Methodology including Research Methodology and Statistics.
(a) History of Medicine – evolution with Special emphasis on Hahnemann’s contribution to Medicine in General.
(b) Basic concepts of Logic, Philosophy and Scientific Methodology including Research Methodology and Statistics.
B. SPECIALTY SUBJECTS
i. In each of the specialty subjects, a deeper understanding than already acquired is expected to be achieved covering the recent advances made and discernible in the subjects concerned.
ii. Each subject of specialty shall have four papers the first two in fundamental and the other two in the applied parts of that subject.
iii. The applied part of clinical subjects deals with the application of the Principles of Homoeopathy in practice. To achieve this effectively a thorough knowledge in:
1. Dynamics and methods of case taking.
2. Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of diseases with various. physical, clinical and laboratory findings.
3. Analysis and synthesis of cases with Hahnemannian evolutionary totality.
4. Selection of medicine including repertorisation and comparative study of Materia Medica.
5. Selection of Potency and Dose. ‘
6. Second prescription.
7. Remedy response and prognosis.
8. Management of the cases in General, therapeutic and accessory, a Necessary case oriented method of study should be adopted here by integrating all disciplines relevant.
(iv) All the Non-clinical subjects, should be taught and learned in Homeopathic perspective.
1. ORGANON OF MEDICINE
Paper I – Hahnemannian concepts of Homoeopathy (Principle and Practice)
A deep understanding of the subject is essential for making a critical and analytical appreciation and evaluation of it. This attempt has to be made by resources and reference to all relevant ‘writings of Hahnemann on the subject.
Paper II – Homoeopathic Philosophy
A study of the interpretations and views of the stalwarts in Homoeopathy like Kent,Stuart Close, H.A.Robert, J.H,Allen, Dunham/ Richard Hughes etc.on Hahnemannian concepts and fundamentals of Homoeopathy is essential. It also aims at making a comparative study of the various philosophies with a view to bringing out the relative merits of the individual contribution to the Hahnemannian concepts of Homoeopathy.
Paper III – Practice of Homoeopathy in Medicine.
Paper IV – Practice of Homoeopathy in Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
2. MATERIA MEDICA
(1) Source of Materia Medica, Drug proving, collection of symptoms- Classification of symptoms, construction of Materia Medica, Types of Materia Medica.
(2) Science and Philosophy of Materia Medica.
(3) Study of Materia Medica.
(4) Scopes and limitations of Materia Medica.
(5) Sources of’ Drugs, Family/group characteristics and drug relationship.
Paper I1. Comparative Materia Medica.
Comparative study of symptoms, Drug pictures & Therapeutic indications of all Drugs.
Paper III. Practice of Homoeopathy in Medicine.
Paper IV. Practice of Homoeopathy in Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
3.REPERTORY
Paper I. Case taking- Dynamics & methods, Case Analysis,Anamnesis, Evaluation of Symptoms.
Paper II. Repertories & Repertorisation:- Source and origin of the Repertory. Different types of Repertories- merits and demerits- Methods of Repertorisation.
Paper III. Practice of Homoeopathy in Medicine.
Paper IV. Practice of Homoeopathy in Surgery, Obstetrics.
4. PRACTICE OF HOMOEOPATHY IN MEDICINE
Paper I. General Medicine including Tropical Medicine with Therarapeutics
Paper II. Medicine Specialities with Therapeutics. (it deals with Peadiatrics, Geriatrics, Dermatology and venerology Including psychiatry).
Paper Ill. Practice of Homoeopathy in General Medicine including tropical Medicine.
Paper IV. Practice of Homoeopathy in Medical speciaIities including Psychiatry.
5 PRACTICE OF HOMOEOPATHY IN SURGERY
Paper I. General Surgery with Therapeutics.

Paper II Public Health Administration including M C H and school health services. Family Welfare, population .Dynamics and Social aspects of Health and Disease.Occupation Wealth.
Paper III Practice of Homoeopathy in Preventive Medicine.

Paper I Forensic Medicine- Forensic Pathology, Forensic serology, Forensic Psychiatry, Forensic Radiology, Medical Jurisprudence.

Paper III Practice of Homoeopathy in Forensic Psychiatry.
Paper IV Practice of Homoeopathy in Toxicology, Drug and Alchohol addiction.
10. ANATOMY
Paper I Developmental and Microscopical Anatomy, Genetics and Anthropology.
Paper II Gross Human MorphoIoqy and Angtomy
Paper III Applied aspects of developmental and Microscopical Anatomy, Genetics and anthropology in relation to Practice of Homoeopathy.
Paper IV Gross Human Morphology and Anatomy in relation to Practice of Homoeopathy.
11. PHYSIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY.
Paper I Physiology – General Physiology, Hematology, Systemic Physiology, Neuro Physiology Including special senses and Endocrinology including reproductive Physiology.
Paper II Bio-Chemistry – Basic Bio-Chemistry, Physiological Chemistry, and Bio-Physics.
Paper III Applied Physiology in Practice of Homoeopathy
Paper IV Applied Bio-Chemistry in Practice of Homoeopathy.
12. PHARMACY AND PHARMACOLOGY
Paper 1 Sourc,Identification Collection, preparation, potensiation,preservation,prescription Dispensing of Homoeopathic Drugs- Legislation relating to Homoeopathic Pharmacy.
Paper II Standardisation of Drugs and vehicles through Analytical methods, Techniques, Biological, Mechanical, Chemical Toxical Properties, and Characteristics- – laboratory methods of drugs. Medical & Non-Medical uses of Drugs.
Paper III Homoeopathic Drug proving, spheres of action, drug affinities.
Paper IV Potency, posology, Duration of action.
PART V – EXAMINATIONS
10. 1. The examination shall be conducted in two parts,namely:-
(a) M.D. (Hom) Part I
(b) M.D. (Hom) Part II
ii. There shall be two examinations in a year for each part with an interval of four to six months.
iii.Parts I and Il Examinations shall be taken at the end of second and third year of studies respectively and each Shall consist of written, vivavoce and Practical/Clinical examinations.
iv. Every candidate seeking admission to part I examination shall submit an application to the University with the remittance of prescribed fee and the following certificates countersigned by the Principal of the Homoeopathic College in which who underwent the course.
a. A certificate from his guide/ supervisor about the completion of the course of studies with a minimum of 80% attendance separately in theory and Practical/ Clinical of the subjects in which the candidate is seeking admission to examination.
b. A certificate from his guide/Supervisor about the satisfactory completion of one year house job in the Collegiate Hospital, a similar one satisfying the requirement in the Department concerned in the cases of Clinical and Non-clinical subjects respectively. They have to produce a certificate to that effect countersigned by the Principal.
c. A statement showing the name of the Quide/Supervisor (Co-Guide/Co-supervisor wherever it is necessary) for Thesis/Dissertation. d. The written consent of the Guide/Supervisor agreeing to supervise and guide.
e. The topic of the Thesis/Dissertation approved by the Guide/Supervisor within six months of admission to the course. A change in the topic shall be permissible at the discretion of the Guide/Supervisor.
V. There are 3 papers under Part.I Examinations for each M.D. (Hom) Course.
There shall be written examinations of 3 hours duration and carrying 100 marks each for 3 papers as mentioned in the syllabus of the General subjects. In addition to this there shall be a combined Viva Voce Examination covering all the 3 papers c-conducted by the examinations of the written examinations. If to get a separate minimum of 50% in each paper and Viva Voce he will not be declared passed in the Part I Examination.

VI. M.D. (Hom) Part II. Examination
a. Every candidate shall prepare and submit four printed or typed copies of his Thesis/ Dissertation to the University for its approval not later than six months ahead of the examination duly approved and countersigned by his Guide/Supervisor in the subject concerned. The Thesis shall embody the result of the candidates own research. The candidate shall indicate in his thesis in what respect his thesis is a contribution advancing the Knowledge in the subject. The thesis should be submitted to the guide/supervisor at least earlier by 3 months than the time fixed for submitting it to the University. The Guide/ Supervisor should have to certify that this work has not previously formed the basis for award of any degree or diploma and that the work is the record of the candidate’s personal efforts. The Thesis shall be scrutinized by the examiners appointed to conduct the examinations. The examiners will report whether the thesis should be accepted or rejected or may make suggestions as they deem fit. The candidate will be allowed to appear for the Part II Examination after the thesis is approved. The candidate whose thesis has not been approved may be permitted to resubmit the thesis within not less than six months and not more than one year after rejection.
b. Every candidate seeking admission to Part II Examination shall submit an application to the University with the remittance of prescribed fee and the following certificates countersigned by the principal of the Homoeopathic College in which who underwent the course.
1. A certificate showing that he has passed Part I Examination
2. A certificate from his Guide/Supervisor about the completion of studies with a minimum of 80% attendance separately in theory and Practical/Clinical of the subjects in which the candidate is seeking admission to examination.
3. A record of training programme of each candidate indicating the various items that constitute the training programme and assessment of performance shall be submitted to the University by the guide for approval and permission to appear for the examination.
c. There shall be written examinations of 3 hours duration and carrying 100 marks each for four papers as mentioned in the syllabus of each speciality subject. In addition to this there shall be a combined Viva Voce Examination covering all the four papers carrying 200 marks and one Practical/Clinical Examination carrying 200 marks. The Clinical/Practical Examination including Viva Voce is aimed at testing the candidates acumen and his/ability to teach and working knowledge in the practice of his speciality. lf a candidate fails to get a separate minimum of 50% in each paper, Viva Voce and Practical/Clinical Examination he will not be declared passed in the Part 11 Examination.

11. A candidate who fails in the Examination shall be permitted to appear again for the examination without undergoing any further course of study provided however that in the case of candidates who fail to pass the examination with in the four consecutive chances immediately for taking the Examination, they have to put in an additional course of six months before they are allowed to appear for the next examination.
12. Declaration of results
The Board of Examiners shall jointly assess and finalise the results and recommends that a candidate be declared passed with distinction/passed/failed, in each examination. Those candidates who secure 75% or above marks are declared as passed with distinction and graded
A’. Those candidates who secure 50% or above marks are declared as passed and graded ‘B’and those candidates who secure below 50% are declared as failed and graded ‘C’. The candidates will only be issued with the gradation list.
13.examiners
i. The qualifications for the examiners shall be the same as of the guides.
ii. A panel of examiners shall be prepared by the University for a period of two years subject to the approval of the Central Council of| Homoeopathy.
iii. At least 50% of the examiners in a subject shall be external. Guide/Supervisor, Co-Guide/Co-Supervisor shall be one of the examiners in the speciality subject concerned.
iv. Each paper shall be valued independently by each of the examiners and the average shall be taken.
Board of examiners
The university will constitute the Board of Examiners for each examination. There will be one examiner each for Paper I and II and two examiners for Paper III under Part l examination. There will be four Examiners for the Part II Examination. The Chairman of each Board will be appointed by the University. The Chairman of the Part ll examination shall be the senior most man in the concerned speciality subject from among the examiners.
v. There shall be a Viva Voce Examination in two sessions for the subject of speciality under Part II Examination. One of such sessions shall be devoted to the thesis/dissertation submitted by the candidates while the other to the subject in general. Each part of the Viva Voce Examination bears 100 marks. Not more than six candidates shall be examined by a panel of Examiners in a day.
vi. There shall be not less than two sessions each of 3 to 4 hours duration for Clinical/Practical Examinations which will be conducted by a panel of four examiners jointly. The number of candidates thus examined shall not exceed six in a day.
14. Award of degree m.d. (hom)
The University shall award the Post Graduate Degree of M.D. (Hom) to the candidates of those who have passed the M.D. (Horn) Part II Examination.
PART VI
15. Requirements for a post graduate teaching centre/college
i. Thecentre/college shall fulfill the minimum requirements as prescribed in the Homoeopathy (Minimum standards of Education) Regulations, 1983 of the C.C.H for undergraduate training. The Centre/College shall obtain evaluation and approval
from the C.C.H. before starting M.D. Course from the University of Kerala.
ii. Post Graduate Departments shall have all facilities of ancillary Departments.
iii. Student Guide/Supervisor ratio shall be 3:1 (ie. one Guide/Supervisor f6r three students).
PART VII
16. Qualifications for teachers, co-guides/co-supervisors
i. post Graduation in the subject concerned with four years/ teaching/clinical experience. OR
(a) Degree in Homoeopathy with seven years teaching experience. OR
(b) Diploma in Homoeopathy with ten years teaching experience.
ii. Qualifications for Guides/Supervisors and Examiners:
(a) Educational:- Diploma or Degree in Homoeopathy or Post Graduate Degree in the concerned subject or qualifications included in the Third Schedule of the Act.
(b) Experience:-Professional experience of not less than twenty years out of which ten years teaching experience in a Homoeopathic College.
PART VIII
Special provision for teachers
Not withstanding anything contained in this regulations the University shall allow the teachers of the Homoeopathic Colleges to appear in the Post Graduate M.D. (Hom) Examinations for a period of eight years from the commencement of this regulations subject to fulfillment of the following conditions.
17. Admission to examination
i. A candidate who has passed Degree/Diploma in Homoeopathy and fulfils any of the following condition shall be eligible for admission to the examination as a teacher candidate.
(a) Holds full time regular post not below the rank or Asst. Professor. OR
(b) Has teaching experience of not less than three years in a Homoeopathic College.
ii. A teacher candidate who has qualified for M.D. (Homoeo) Course as specified above shall be eligible to undergo the three years Part time course of study as detailed below in any of the Homoeopathic College which is affiliated to the University for conducting M.D. Courses in Homoeopathy.
iii. The course of study shall extend for a period of Three years (including one year House job) consecutively with 40 days in Second and Third years of the course 12 days in May, 5 days each during Onam & Christmas holidays and all second saturdays and Sundays except those coming in the months of May,August/September and December. In the event of any inability to conduct course any such second Saturdays and Sundays such courses shall be conducted on other days in the same month conveniently with a view to ensuring 40 days course in a year.
iv.Six hours in a day will be devoted for studies. 80% attendance is compulsory in this course of study. iv. Candidates pursuing part time course shall undergo research in the respective Department of a Homoeopathic Degree College under the guidance of a guide/Supervisor, recognised by the University, emphasis being made on practical training, participation in seminars, Symposia, group discussions, clinical meetings, Journal club, etc. They should be working as a teachers in the subject concerned in their respective institutions all throughout the period of their course of study from the date of commencement of part time course (Three Years). They should have achieved at least 80% attendance in their teaching work in the Institution. A Certificate to the above effect should be obtained from the Heads of Departments duly countersigned by the Principal of their Institution.
This certificate should be produced to the Principal of the College where they are undergoing the Part Time Course, before the submission of applications for Part I and Part II Examinations. This certificate is essential for deeming the candidates as having completed their course of study satisfactorily on par with -the candidates who pursue the regular course. .
v. The regulations governing the Syllabus, Thesis/Dissertation, examination, Examiners, Qualification of guides/Supervisors, Examiners, Declaration of Results etc. will be the same as those of regular M.D. (Hom) course concerned.
