Tamil Nadu asks doctors to remove their names from healthcare websites

The Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TNMC), which is responsible for regulating medical doctors in Tamil Nadu, has sent notices to many doctors, asking them to remove their names from a famous healthcare website.

They are treating this listing as an advertisement, and state that it breaches the code of medical ethics. This notice is going to raise a hornet’s nest, because it raises more questions than it answers. Will other state medical councils also send similar notices ?

How will this impact the business model of doctor discovery platforms? Will they fight ? Will doctors object to the notice ? If doctors are not allowed to use the internet to reach out to their patients, won’t this make it harder for patients to find the right doctor ? In this day and age, is this a sensible step to take ?
