ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute and Government Homoeopathic Medical College Kozhikode Sign MoU for Collaborative Research

The ICAR–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR–CMFRI) Kozhikode and Government Homoeopathic Medical College, Kozhikode, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote collaborative research, academic cooperation, and interdisciplinary scientific studies in the field of aquaculture.

Aquaculture plays a vital role in ensuring food and nutritional security, supporting the livelihoods of fish farmers and coastal communities, and meeting the growing demand for fish and fishery products. However, the sector faces several challenges, including disease outbreaks, deterioration of water quality, rising feed costs, nutritional deficiencies, and the inappropriate or excessive use of antibiotics, hormones, disinfectants, and other chemical agents.

A major area of interest will be research in Aquacultural Homoeopathy, with a focus on scientifically evaluating the potential role of homoeopathic preparations in supporting fish health, growth, disease resilience, and overall productivity.

The research will explore whether homoeopathic interventions can serve as an eco-friendly and low-cost supportive approach in aquaculture and contribute to reducing the unnecessary use of antibiotics and other potentially harmful drugs.

By integrating expertise in fisheries science, aquaculture, fish nutrition, animal health, homoeopathy, and allied disciplines, the collaboration aims to develop evidence-based and environmentally responsible approaches to address emerging challenges in aquaculture.

The partnership will also create valuable opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students, PhD scholars, faculty members, scientists, and researchers of both institutions. Joint research projects, scientific training, knowledge-sharing programmes, seminars, workshops, conferences, and other academic activities are expected to strengthen interdisciplinary learning and research capacity.

The collaboration is expected to generate new scientific knowledge and innovative research opportunities that may benefit fish farmers, strengthen the aquaculture sector, protect aquatic ecosystems, and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future for fisheries and aquaculture.
