Abstract
Simple myopia is the most common developmental form of myopia and may affect visual performance, education and occupational activities. Homoeopathy offers a therapeutic approach based on individual susceptibility and the presenting clinical features. Physostigma venenosum is described in homoeopathic materia medica in association with several ocular complaints, including disturbances of accommodation and increasing myopia.
Keywords: Simple myopia, Physostigma 0/1, Physostigma venenosum, homoeopathy, refractive error, retinoscopy.
Aim
To evaluate the effectiveness of Homoeopathic Physostigma 0/1 in the treatment of simple myopia.
Objectives
1. To observe the subjective changes occurring during the treatment period.
2. To compare refractive values before and after treatment using retinoscopy findings.
Materials and Methods
Study Design
The present study was designed as an observational prospective study to assess the outcome of Homoeopathic Physostigma 0/1 in cases of simple myopia.
Source of Data
The subjects were selected from the students of
• Students of Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri;
• Interns of Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri;
• Ladies hostel under Alva’s Education Foundation; and
• other peripherals where interns are working.
Conclusion
The present observational study included 30 subjects with simple myopia who received Homoeopathic Physostigma 0/1 and were followed for a maximum period of 180 days. Improvement was observed in 18 cases (60%), while 12 cases (40%) showed no improvement.
Based on the observations of the present study, Homoeopathic Physostigma 0/1 may have a possible beneficial role in the management of simple myopia. However, further studies with larger sample sizes and suitable comparative groups are necessary to establish the findings more conclusively.
