Homoeopathic management of Plaque Psoriasis: a case report

ABSTRACT:
Psoriasis affects 2-3% of the world population. The prevalence in India is between 0.44% and 2.8%. It is most prevalent in North America & Western Europe. It commonly affects individuals in their 3rd to 4th decade of life. Males are affected two times more commonly than females. The psychosocial burden is higher because of cultural reasons, socioeconomic status and higher levels of social stigma and discrimination due to misunderstandings and misconceptions.

Case description:  A 54 year old male presented with the complaints of of scaly eruptions with itching all over the body since 37 years. Case was diagnosed as plaque psoriasis. After taking the case, it was analyzed and symptoms were evaluated and individualized homoeopathic medicine was given. Patient showed remarkable improvement after the treatment.

Conclusion: Over several months, the patient experienced improvement in his general symptoms, with decreased itching and reduced scaly eruptions. Follow-up showed continued and improved quality of life for the patient. This case demonstrates the effectiveness of homoeopathic treatment in the management of plaque psoriasis.

  • Occupation : welder
  • Marital status : married

CHIEF COMPLAINT:

Patient presented with the complaint of scaly eruptions with itching all over the body since 37 years.

LOCATION SENSATION MODALITY CONCOMITANT
All over the body Silvery scaly eruptions.

Wants to itch till it bleeds, without any relief.

HISTORY OF CHIEF COMPLAINTS:
Patient was apparently well in his childhood till the age of 17 years. Gradually he started with itching with scaly eruptions over left palm & left sole.

Later the eruptions gradually progressed all over the body with peeling of skin. Itching is more in the cold weather & less in hot weather.

He consulted many dermatologists, physicians for the complaints & used various medications for this. Few of them are-

  • Salicylic acid ointment
  • Neotrexate & Methotrexate
  • Naati medicines
  • Homeopathic meds (Ant crud etc)

PAST HISTORY:
Knee surgery (Right) after an accident (10 Years back).

  • Thirst : Thirsty, drinks around 2-3 litres/day.
  • Desires & Aversions : nothing specific.
  • Bowel habits : Regular, once/day; Satisfactory.
  • Bladder habits : 3-4/D and 0-1/N; no burning.
  •  Perspiration : Profuse; more on axilla.
  •  Sleep: 8-9 hours; Sound sleep.
  •  Dreams : not remembered
  •  Addiction: Alcohol, cigarette smoking.
  •  Thermals : Hot patient.

LIFE SPACE INVESTIGATION
Patient was born and brought up in mudalapalya, bangalore. He  hails from a middle class family. His father was a daily wage worker and mother a housewife. He studied till B.A. (English).

Childhood :
Patient was very good in studies. But he got into the habit of alcohol drinking & cigarette smoking in his very young age of 14 yrs due to peers. Still he studied till B.A (English).

He was very sensitive to rude behaviours, any abusive words from others. He cannot tolerate those & would beat the person for that; Impulsive. He wants everyone to speak with respect & softly with him.

Occupation:
He has worked as assistant under many political persons & officials.  He did not continue anywhere just because they talked to him with some kind of disrespect, rudely or abused him. He used to resign the job then & there. Now he is working as a welder. He has regret for that – “I would have been in a higher position if I controlled my anger”. Feels very sad to work as welder even though he is educated.

An Incident:
Once he & his friends were drunk in the roadside & having fun each other. A policeman came & tried to send them with abusive words. The patient got anger & hit him very badly. Later he went to court for this & somehow proved himself not guilty.

Married life :
Got married at the age of 34 years. He has 1 son. The relationship was not good (because of his anger). He left her.
Later, he married to another girl at the age of 42. He has 1 daughter. Now the relationship is good with her.

Nature (Disposition):
He gets anger easily if anybody talks to his with disrespect or orders him. He likes to take revenge which makes him happy. He regrets him past as he spoiled his life due to bad habits.

DISCUSSION:
This case report describes the management of plaque psoriasis in a 54-year-old male using individualized homoeopathic medicine. Patient presented with the complaint of scaly eruptions with itching all over the body since 37 years. Through a detailed analysis and evaluation, an individualized homeopathic medicine is selected based on the patient’s totality of symptoms. The results of this case contribute to the growing body of evidence showing the management in homoeopathic treatment of psoriasis. Further studies, including clinical trials designed with large sample sizes and complex procedures, are needed to clarify the mechanisms of action of homeopathic remedies indicated in the management of plaque psoriasis.

CONCLUSION:
This case report highlights the potential of individualized homoeopathic treatment as a safe therapeutic option for plaque psoriasis. Over a period of several weeks, the patient experienced a gradual improvement in itching, with a notable reduction in scaly eruptions all over the body. Follow-up assessments demonstrated sustained relief and overall enhancement in the patient’s well-being. This case highlights the potential effectiveness of homeopathic treatment in managing plaque psoriasis.
