Abstract:
Tonsillitis is a generalised infectious disease with inflammation of the pharyngeal lymphoid structures, above all the faucial tonsils and with swelling of the regional lymphatic glands. Homoeopathy being a science of individualization, believe that no two human beings are alike. Individualization is a process of differentiation a person based on his peculiar characteristic or distinguishing features. A Homoeopathic physician must individualize and he must discriminate between the patients as well as remedies.
Case report: 1
A male child patient aged 12 yrs came to OPD- 192 with the complaint of pain in throat since which is aggravated during swallowing, after taking cold drinks. There is no fever, no burning of throat. Pain shifts from left to right side of throat, pain and swelling in right side of neck which is worse at evening. Complaints are associated with obstruction of left nostril, recurrent cold tendency, greenish discharge from nose aggravated every winter, at night, better in summer season. There is a family history of Asthma and Tonsilitis.
The patient has poor appetite and thirst for small quantities of water at long intervals. There is a desire for fish. His urine, bowels are regular and normal. His sleep was refreshed. On exertion there is profuse perspiration.
The patient was very cooperative. Always wants to play with his friends and his sister. Good in studies. But, he easily gets angry when any one opposes him. He was afraid of being alone and wants any one of his family members to accompany him.
On examination of throat, there is congestion of fauces and tonsils. Size of tonsils is grade -II, based on Brodsky scale of tonsils.
Diagnostic assessment:
Based on clinical history of patient and systemic examination, it is a case of tonsillitis.
Totality Of Symptoms with miasmatic assessment:
- Anger from contradiction- Psora, Sycosis, Syphilis
- Desires fish – Psora
- Cold catching tendency – Psora, Syphilis, Latent Psora
- Inflammation of tonsils – Psora
- Pain in throat while swallowing – Psora
- Pain in throat from cold drinks – Psora
- Obstruction of nose on left side- Psora, Sycosis, Latent Psora
- Obstruction of nose at night time – Psora, Syphilis, Sycosis, Latent Psora
- Greenish discharge from nose – Syphilis, Sycosis
After Repertorisation, Lycopodium 200c was prescribed upon final consultation with Materia medica. Single dose of Lycopodium 200c and sac lac is given for 15 days.
Follow Up: For follow up criteria Brodsky scale of tonsils size has been used.
Patient came for follow up on 28/1/25 – complaints better after medication. Pain in throat relieved, Redness of fauces and tonsils relieved. Tonsils size reduced to grade -I, So SL for 14 days was given. On 27/2/25, complaints were stand still, there was no Improvement further, Lyco 1M and SL for 21 days was prescribed. On 21/3/ 25, patient is feeling better, SL was given for one month. On 19/4/25, patient was fine , no recurrence of complaints- no throat pain. Tonsils size came to normal to grade 0, SL was given. On 6/5/25, patient was fine no other complaints, SL was given for one month.
Case- 2:
A female child patient aged about 12 yrs came to OPD with no- 4225 is complaining of enlarged tonsils since 2-3 yrs, no pain on swallowing, sometimes, there will be pain on left side of the throat after taking cold water and persists for 1 week. There is also a complaint of difficulty in breathing since 4 months worse on running, mid night, talking for long time, associated with snoring.
On enquiry there is recurrence of sore throats for the past 3 years and for that she used allopathic medications. There is no significant family history.
The patient appetite was good and she has a thirst for moderate quantities of water , has a desires for ice creams and chocolates and is intolerant to cold drinks and cold water. She has profuse perspiration on scalp and around mouth, urine and bowels are regular and normal, sleep was refreshing, and has dreams of snakes. Her menstrual history is normal.
She has fear of ghosts and she cannot mingle with more people – reserved.
On examination of throat there are enlarged tonsils on both sides, no signs of inflammation and there is enlargement of submandibular lymph nodes. According to Brodsky scale of tonsil size – Grade- II.
Totality Of Symptoms with Miasmatic Assessment:
- Fear of ghosts -Psora
- Reserved – Psora, Sycosis
- Dreams of snakes – Psora
- Intolerance to cold – Psora
- Perspiration on scalp – Sycosis, Syphilis
- Enlargement of tonsils – Syphilis
- Pain in throat worse by cold drinks- Psora
- Difficulty in respiration talking after – Psora
After Repertorisation, Lachesis 200c was prescribed upon final consultation with Materia medica. Single dose of Lachesis 200c and sac lac is given for 15 days.
Follow Up: Patient came for follow up on 9/5/24 – complaints better after medication, pain in throat pain better, difficulty in breathing better, SL was given for 21 days. On 30/5/24, Tonsils size not reduced, Lachesis 200C is repeated again and SL for 2 weeks. On 24/6/24, complaints were stand still, there was no Improvement further, Lach 1M 1 dose and SL for 21 days was prescribed. On 23/7/24, patient is feeling better, tonsils size reduced to grade -I, SL was given for one month. On 19/8/24, patient was fine, no recurrence of complaints- no throat pain while taking cold water, difficulty in breathing relieved, SL was given for 21 days. On 6/9/24, Tonsils size came to normal to grade 0, SL was given for one month.
Informed Consent: Informed content was obtained from the patient for reporting this case.
Conclusion: Tonsillitis is a common and often recurrent illness in children. Homeopathy offers an individualised, holistic approach that can reduce symptoms and prevent complications, especially in chronic or recurrent cases.
