Thrombophlebitis: a case study

Abstract:
Superficial thrombophlebitis (SVTE), inflammation of superficial veins associated with thrombosis, is a painful condition and ~3 to 11% of the population will develop SVTE during their lifetime. Although generally considered a benign, self-limited disease, it can cause considerable discomfort, impact mobility and lead to further complications1. A 52-year-old male patient having complaints of swelling and pain of right leg since5 years and known case of THROMBOPHLEBITIS. Based on the totality of symptoms SULPHUR 1M for 3days OD was given and MEDORRHINUM 1M ONE DOSE was given after 15 days. Patient complaints start reducing.

INTRODUCTION:
Thrombophlebitis, thrombus means blood clot and Phlebitis is the inflammation of veins usually in legs. Thrombophlebitis is mainly seen in superficial veins particularly in varicose veins or veins which have been cannulated for infusion. In these cases, venous thrombosis is associated with acute inflammatory response giving raise to pain, local swelling, redness and tenderness.2

When inflammation due to a blood clot occurs in a vein, it is called Thrombophlebitis. Thrombophlebitis usually occurs in the veins of the legs. Rarely, it can occur in the veins of the arms or neck. Superficial (on the surface) thrombophlebitis occurs in the visible veins just under the skin. The area of inflammation is usually reddened, tender, and warm to the touch and can be painful. The extremity may swell and fever may occur.3

PRESENTING COMPLAINTS
Patient presented with complaints of swelling in the right leg since 5 years onset was gradual with sensation of heaviness and swelling. As swelling reduces, he starts with a pain and gripping in right thigh. His complaints get ameliorated by elevating the leg and Aggravated by walking.

He also presented with itching in right leg for past 3 days. Itching started suddenly which gets aggravated by washing leg with water and at night.

There is no significant past history. He underwent Varicose vein stripping of right leg in 2015. He even took allopathic treatment for the same complaints.

SUMMARY
A patient complaining of having right leg pain and swelling for 5 years. Based on the totality of symptoms SULPHUR 1M 3days was given and MEDORRHNUM 1M ONE DOSE was given. Patient improved in complaints and feeling better. After the first prescription patient improved symptomatically.
